Hi!
Welcome to the cedar dome! I’m Lindsey and I’m so glad you are here! Let me introduce myself and our family.
My husband, Les and I, moved to our little geo dome on 1.8 acres with our five girls and one boy four years ago. For the first 10 years we lived in a tiny bungalow in a small country town. We hosted some of the biggest gatherings and more in our tiny home with just an extra lot. We eventually needed more space and came upon our dome home. It took one visit to fall in love with this place, it had a great sledding hill, park-like backyard, and all the hobbit feels with the cedar and woods. The trees surrounding the property guided us along like a natural fence. We are now DIY’ing it space by space and room by room!
We have a remodel and tiling business and have plans to move towards house flips and hopefully an airbnb at some point. We thrive hosting gatherings, and keeping our hands dirty working on projects that bring purpose and better functionality to our stead!
ABOUT ME
I grew up in the middle of Illinois then my family moved my freshmen year of high school to the St. Louis metro east area. Eventually met my husband Les (married 15 years last October) and we still live around this area where most of our family is near.
My first real job was at a little local heath food store that I started working at in high school. My husbands sister worked there which eventually led to me meeting my husband. I have some great memories from that job. It taught me a lot of skills and opened my mind to a different approach to health. Learning about vitamins, organic & natural foods, homeopathics, & learning how to take more effort in my own health.
Any time I have a moment outdoors you will find me in the flower garden. I’m not an expert at all but its my favorite space at our cottage. It came with beautiful flowers and I’ve been enjoying adding new ones along side. So if I can keep things alive and continue to learn more each year, that’s a big accomplishment for me. Also, mulching! My husband knows to keep me stocked up! Its a great workout and I get some of my best ideas while mulching. (If you enjoy gardening and would like to preview my “Simple Garden Journal” Ebook that I offer for free to subscribers, click here.)
We have a family business (kitchen & bathroom remodeling and so much tiling) my husband runs and we help when able. My day consists of homeschooling our six children and keeping up with our homestead.
Our kitchen really is the heart of our home (literally.) I’ve always got a new kitchen tool or gadget I’m hunting down. Specialty and beautiful cookware is what I try to fill my kitchen cupboards with (they will last forever and if you can find them on sale then its even better.) I frequent our local gourmet kitchen store any chance I get.
Spending time with my family being outside, hiking, biking, building or painting projects in the garage, gardening, chats in the warm grass and hanging in the hammock with some kiddos or a good book are all things I enjoy.
A refreshing and wake me up to my day always starts with some hot steaming black coffee (yes, I save the fancy cappuccinos or cream for when I’m out and about and can visit a local coffee spot,) or tea, but mostly coffee.
Snow! I mean, I’m obsessed with it! I don’t feel like its a downer, I actually make more of a point to get outside in the Winter if there’s snow to take a walk in. We are northern people and go to camp every summer up in Minnesota. We try to get there once a winter also if able. The snow up there is just magical. My “About” photo was taken at our beloved camp and it was one of those perfect moments in time.
Our Cottage Homestead
While our acreage is on the smaller side for homesteading, we are excited to share how we plan to maximize its space to the fullest. We have some neat plans for this little homestead! Keep checking back as we take you on our journey along with tips on creating an inviting home. We aren’t cozying up this place just for us but to continue to make a space to enjoy with our family and friends and be hospitable to the mostest!
2022 Homestead Plans
So our cottage homestead is still in the beginning process. We have two cats and 19 full grown chickens we added this past Winter. Getting chickens has been amazing, if you’ve been thinking of getting some for your little yard or small acreage, DO IT! It’s just the best!
This year our focus will be adding a vegetable garden on our large hill out front. We are planning on building some raised garden beds horizontally because that space is largely open and unused and gets a lot of sunlight. We will be starting with tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, etc. and will be sharing our garden journey along the way.
Preparation for bees is also on our 2022 list. We actually were looking for bees before getting chickens and some friends that moved away offered us all their chickens and coop so we gladly, adopted them, and got them moved to our property. But we still are eager to get some bees. Our dome home has been called many things including hobbit house, pineapple under the sea, a beehive, and more. I like “The Hive” the best and do seem to have little elements of bees throughout the decor in our home.
There are a couple other items on our list regarding indoors verses outdoor things and will be sharing those plans soon also.
